The 2022 Eisenberg Family Lecture in Public History, part of the Centenary series of the Institute of Historical Research, takes the form of a witness seminar examining the National Curriculum History Working Group in 1989-1990 and the reaction to its findings. The Group’s report offered guidance on how history should be taught in the UK’s first National Curriculum, and its report proved controversial. The seminar will explore the broader political context of History curriculum reform and will seek to draw out the significance of this exercise and the extent to which the issues it raised resurfaced in subsequent debates about the History curriculum. It is hosted in partnership with History & Policy.
